Topic: Scaling Agile Teams: Focus, Frameworks, and Pitfalls to Avoid
Speaker: Mr. Richard Cheng (PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM, CSPO, Active MENSA Member)
PDU: 1.2 – Ways of Working
Presentation Abstract:

As organizations grow, so do the complexities of managing multiple Agile teams. One of the fundamental challenges in scaling Agile is ensuring team members are dedicated to a single team rather than being spread thin across multiple teams. This session will explore why team focus is critical for Agile success and how context switching can erode productivity and engagement.

From there, we’ll examine common scaling frameworks such as the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) and Large-Scale Scrum (LeSS)—discussing their key principles, differences, and practical applications. While these frameworks offer structured approaches to scaling, they also come with challenges that can hinder agility rather than enhance it.

Through real-world insights, we’ll highlight traps to avoid when working with multiple Agile teams, such as misaligned backlogs, ineffective synchronization, and over-reliance on rigid processes. Attendees will leave with a clearer understanding of how to scale Agile effectively while maintaining the core values of collaboration, adaptability, and continuous improvement.

This interactive session is ideal for project managers, Agile practitioners, and leaders navigating the complexities of scaling Agile in their organizations.

Presentation Learning Objectives:

  • Identify and analyze common challenges in scaling Agile across multiple teams, including shifting priorities, managing dependencies, and context switching.

  • Apply practical strategies and patterns to align cross-functional teams and foster cohesive collaboration that maximizes value delivery in a scaled Agile environment.

  • Compare and evaluate popular Agile scaling frameworks (e.g., SAFe, LeSS, Scrum@Scale) to determine which approaches and tools best fit your organization’s specific scaling needs.
