Topic: Managing Green Projects: How to Project Manage Sustainability
PDU: 1.75 – Ways of Working
Presenter: Ms. Julia Giglio (MSSCM)
Presentation Abstract:

As global expectations around environmental responsibility accelerate, project managers are increasingly being called upon to deliver initiatives that are not only successful, but sustainable. This session explores the business case for integrating sustainability into project delivery, including a concise overview of emerging international regulations shaping corporate environmental accountability. Participants will learn practical strategies for responsibly sourcing materials and resources, with an emphasis on balancing cost, quality, and environmental impact.

The session also highlights the latest PMI Global offering of the Sustainable Project Management for Certified Practitioners™ course and the GPM‑b™ | Certified Green Project Manager – Basic™ exam—an integrated learning and certification pathway that equips practitioners with the knowledge, tools, and globally recognized credentials to lead environmentally, socially, and economically responsible projects. Attendees will discover how to assess project impacts, build a Sustainability Management Plan (SMP), and embed sustainability into every phase of the project lifecycle, then validate their expertise through the GPM‑b™, the leading certification for ethical project leadership.

We conclude with an interactive supply‑chain case study, where participants collaborate in small groups to evaluate sourcing options, debate trade‑offs, and present innovative approaches for embedding sustainability into real‑world project decisions.

Learning Objectives:
Participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Explain the business case for sustainable project management by identifying key global regulations, organizational drivers, and stakeholder expectations that influence how modern projects are planned and delivered.
  • Apply practical methods for integrating sustainability into project work, including assessing project impacts, developing a Sustainability Management Plan (SMP), and making responsible sourcing decisions
  • Evaluate sustainable supply‑chain options through a collaborative case study, demonstrating the ability to analyze trade‑offs, recommend ethical sourcing strategies, and connect these skills to core competencies.
